ALLENTOWN, PA - Long-term school directors are being honored across the state by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association at the local school board meetings. School directors are recognized for years of service from 8 years and up.
Audrey Mathison a member of the Allentown School District school board, received recognition for 8 years of service. At the Thursday, August 24, 2023 Regular Board Meeting, Ms. Mathison was presented a certificate adding her to the PSBA Honor Roll of School Board Service.
“I am thankful for the dedication, service and leadership that Ms. Mathison provides to our School Board of Directors,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Superintendent. “As a retired educator, Ms. Mathison’s unwavering commitment to education and tireless efforts on behalf of our school district have not only enriched the lives of countless students and staff members but have also been recognized on a broader scale.”
PSBA believes that school board service is embedded in the history of our nation and its commitment to public education. Pennsylvania, as one of the founding colonies of the United States, established the concept of schooling in its first constitution in 1776. Later, the Pennsylvania Free School Act of 1834 marked the first permanent state of interest in public education and the birth of the first elected school board in the nation.
PSBA’s Senior Director of Member Outreach Becky Dussinger states, “School directors today have a more challenging job than ever before in our complex society. As unpaid volunteers, they give generously of their time all year long to help guide the education of our children. The Honor Roll is the association’s way of thanking these dedicated leaders, who are committed to the success of our public schools and the students they serve.”
Audrey Mathison was first elected to the board in 2015 and has previously served as both president and vice president. A retired educator, working with students has always been very important to her. She enjoys working together with all of the board members to improve the lives of our students by providing a high-quality educational experience. Ms. Mathison brings her expertise to the Negotiations Committee and also represents ASD on the LCTI JOC.
